With St. John’s and Syracuse all square at one win apiece, the scene shifts to Mile One Centre beginning with Game 3 tonight… The Crunch will have to win two of three on the Rock in order to advance, but the IceCaps were a modest 20-15-3-0 on home ice during the regular season, including a two-game split with Syracuse on Dec. 6-7… This will be the first Calder Cup Playoff game at Mile One since Apr. 22, 2005, a 6-1 win by the St. John’s Maple Leafs over the Manitoba Moose… Aaron Gagnon (3-0-3) has scored three of the IceCaps’ six goals in the series to date… Defenseman Derek Meech, limited to eight regular-season games between St. John’s and Winnipeg due to injury this year, has two points in the first two games of the series, including his first career playoff goal… Mark Bell (2-1-3), Mathieu Carle (0-3-3) and Dan Sexton (0-3-3) share the Crunch scoring lead in the series… Syracuse is 2-for-8 on the power play; St. John’s is 1-for-8.

After defending its home ice in Games 1 and 2, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton heads down Interstate 81 with a chance to finish off Hershey in Game 3 tonight… The Penguins are 9-1-0-1 at Giant Center over the last two seasons, but have lost 10 of 11 playoff games all-time in that building… Colin McDonald, whose offensive output decreased from 42 goals in 2010-11 to 14 goals this season, already has 4-1-5 in the first two games of the series for Wilkes-Barre… Jason Williams (0-5-5) leads the AHL in postseason assists… Brad Thiessen (2-0, 1.50, .917) faced just 36 shots combined in Games 1 and 2 for the Penguins, who allowed a league-low 26.1 shots per game in the regular season… After leading the AHL in scoring in the regular season, Chris Bourque is still looking for his first point of the series… Hershey is 4-3 when facing elimination since 2006, including home wins over the Penguins in 2008 (one) and 2009 (two).

Coming off a loss for the first time in 11 weeks, Norfolk heads to Manchester with the teams’ Eastern Conference quarterfinal series tied at 1-1… The Admirals had won 29 consecutive games before the Monarchs’ 5-2 victory in Game 2 on Saturday evened the best-of-five series with the final three games scheduled for the Verizon Wireless Arena… Linden Vey (2-1-3) had three points in the win, Brandon Kozun (1-0-1), Robert Czarnik (1-0-1) and Andy Andreoff (1-0-1) all scored and Martin Jones (1-0, 1.26, .966) stopped 37 of 39 shots after a perfect 19-save effort in relief of Jeff Zatkoff in Game 1… Winger Alexandre Picard (3-1-4) scored both Admirals goals in the loss, their first defeat since a 4-2 setback in Springfield on Feb. 5… Eddie Shore Award winner Mark Barberio, who led all AHL defensemen with 48 assists, 61 points and a plus-28 rating in 2011-12, is 1-0-1 and minus-5 for Norfolk in the series thus far… Norfolk won its last 13 road games in the regular season and tied a single-season AHL record with 28 wins away from home.

Darren Haydar (3-3-6) scored twice for his third consecutive two-point game as Chicago staved off elimination with a 3-2 win over San Antonio in Game 3 last night… The Rampage get another crack at finishing off the Wolves tonight at Allstate Arena, where the Wolves are now 7-3 in their AHL history when facing elimination at home… Jordan Schroeder also scoed for Chicago last night, his first goal of the series and fifth of his AHL playoff career… Defenseman Alex Petrovic, a second-round draft pick by Florida in 2010, scored his first professional goal for the Rampage… After going a combined 9-for-19 on the power play in Games 1 and 2, the teams were 1-for-9 in Game 3… San Antonio has not lost back-to-back games both on the road (excluding shootouts) since Dec. 26-27 at Houston and Texas.

After playing a string of must-win games down the stretch just to qualify for the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs, Milwaukee finds itself needing three straight wins in Abbotsford to salvage its season after falling into an 0-2 series hole… The Admirals scored 16 goals in four regular-season meetings with the Heat in 2011-12, but were outscored 6-2 and 4-2 to open the series… Abbotsford, which has scored 10 goals on 53 shots, has been led by Krys Kolanos (4-2-6), who now has 15-9-24 in his last 10 outings… Ben Walter, in the Calder Cup Playoffs for the sixth time with his fifth different team (Providence, Bridgeport, Lowell, Lake Erie, Abbotsford), has 1-3-4 in the series and 12-14-26 in 35 career postseason AHL games… Eight different players have found the scoresheet for Milwaukee, but none has more than one point… The Admirals were 6-1-0-1 in their last eight road games during the regular season; the Heat were 6-0-0-1 in their last seven at home.


From Calder to Stanley

2005 AHL All-Star Zach Parise assisted on Travis Zajac‘s game-winning goal as New Jersey prolonged its series with a 3-2 overtime win in Game 6 vs. Florida last night… New Jersey’s lineup featured four players had skated for Albany in the AHL this season: Adam Henrique, Stephen Gionta, Steve Bernier (goal) and Peter Harrold (assist)… Tyson Strachan, who played 50 AHL games for San Antonio in 2011-12, had an assist for Florida, his first career Stanley Cup Playoff point.

77.1 – In AHL history when a best-of-five is tied 1-1, percentage of Game 3 winners who have gone on to win the series (37 of 48).

+45 – Norfolk’s third-period goal differential in the regular season, the highest of any team in any period in 2011-12… The Admirals have been outscored 5-0 in the third period of their first two games vs. Manchester.

April 25, 2011Mark Van Guilder‘s goal 10:42 into the second overtime period gives Milwaukee a 3-2 win over Texas and sends the Admirals into the second round with a six-game victory over the defending conference champions.

April 25, 2005 – With the Penguins down 0-2 in the series, Colby Armstrong’s goal at 12:26 of the third overtime lifts Wilkes-Barre/Scranton past Binghamton, 3-2, in Game 3 of their first-round series.

April 25, 2004Andy Chiodo makes 32 saves on his 21st birthday and Konstantin Koltsov scores 11:44 into overtime to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 3-2 win at Bridgeport in Game 7 of their East Division semifinal… Five of the seven games in the series required OT.

April 25, 1992 – Bruce Boudreau scores what would be the last goal of his professional career, helping the Adirondack Red Wings to a 5-3 win at Springfield in Game 1 of their second-round series.

April 25, 1964 – The Cleveland Barons cap a perfect 9-0 playoff run with a 5-2 win over the Quebec Aces, capturing the franchise’s ninth and final Calder Cup championship.
