St. John’s tries to pull even in the Eastern Conference Finals as Norfolk hosts Game 2 tonight… The Admirals rolled to a 6-1 win in Thursday’s series opener, with defensemen scoring four of Norfolk’s six goals… Mike Kostka (3-5-8) scored twice, Jean-Philippe Cote (1-1-2) netted his first goal in 33 career playoff games and Keith Aulie (1-1-2) picked up his first goal in 73 games during 2011-12… Ondrej Palat (4-3-7) had a goal and an assist in Game 1 for the Admirals and Michel Ouellet (1-2-3) scored his first postseason goal since 2005… Dustin Tokarski (5-2, 2.21, .917) finished with 29 saves in the victory… Zach Redmond (1-2-3) scored the only goal for the IceCaps, his first since Apr. 3… Norfolk, 7-for-60 on the power play through the first two rounds, was 2-for-5 in Game 1; St. John’s was 1-for-7… Eddie Pasquale (7-5, 2.44, .920) allowed four goals on 21 shots before giving way to David Aebischer, who stopped 10 of 12 shots in his first Calder Cup Playoff action since 2000 with Hershey… Norfolk has outscored its opponents 12-2 in winning its last three games.

From Calder to Stanley

Several coaches remaining in the Stanley Cup conference finals have Calder Cup experience on their resumes… New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella won an AHL championship as bench boss of the Rochester Americans in 1996… New Jersey assistant coaches Larry Robinson (Nova Scotia Voyageurs, 1972) and Adam Oates (Adirondack Red Wings, 1986) won Calder Cups during their playing careers, and Devils assistant Dave Barr was the general manager of the Calder Cup champion Houston Aeros in 2003… Los Angeles assistant coach and AHL Hall of Famer John Stevens won three Calder Cups as a player (Hershey Bears, 1988; Springfield Indians, 1991; Philadelphia Phantoms, 1998) and a fourth as head coach of the Phantoms in 2005… Phoenix associate coach Jim Playfair was head coach of the Saint John Flames, winning a Calder Cup in 2001, and Coyotes assistant John Anderson won Calder Cups as head coach of the Chicago Wolves in 2002 and 2008.

May 19, 1983 – Led by head coach Mike Keenan, the Rochester Americans win the Calder Cup with a 3-1 win at Maine, completing a four-game Finals sweep.
