SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that St. John’s IceCaps center John Albert has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 23, 2014.

Albert notched five goals and an assist last week – including three shorthanded markers and one game-winner – to help the IceCaps to four consecutive road victories.

On Tuesday night, Albert had two goals and an assist during the IceCaps’ six-goal second period against Portland, scoring a shorthanded marker that stood up as the game-winner in a 7-5 St. John’s decision. After being held scoreless in Friday’s 5-1 win at Worcester, Albert came back with another shorthanded goal as the IceCaps beat the Sharks, 3-1, in the rematch on Saturday. And Sunday, Albert scored twice more, with a first-period power-play tally and a shorthanded goal that sparked a five-goal third period sending St. John’s to a 6-5 win over Portland.

A third-year pro out of Ohio State University, Albert has recorded 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points in 49 games for St. John’s this season and leads the AHL with six shorthanded goals, including five in his last eight outings. The 25-year-old native of Cleveland, Ohio, was a 2007 draft choice by the Winnipeg organization and made his NHL debut with the Jets this season, tallying one goal in eight games. Albert has skated in 137 career AHL contests, all with St. John’s, and has registered 27 goals and 35 assists for 62 points.

In recognition of his achievement, Albert will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming IceCaps home game.
