Bears’ Cassivi earns milestone award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League has named Hershey Bears goaltender Frederic Cassivi the recipient of the CCM/AHL Milestone of the Month award for February.

On Feb. 24 in Albany, Cassivi joined just 12 other goaltenders in American Hockey League history with 400 career games played when he led the visiting Bears onto the ice to face the River Rats.

In the milestone game, Cassivi made 33 saves as Hershey posted a 4-3 overtime victory over Albany.

Now in his 10th American Hockey League season, Cassivi has amassed a record of 182-155-37 in 401 career AHL games. In 2004-05, he became the third goaltender in AHL history to record 10 shutouts in a season, and this year he has already established a career high with 26 victories, leading the league in that department.

Marcel Paille is the league’s all-time leader in games played by a goaltender with 765 over 15 AHL seasons from 1956-74. Gord Henry and Nick Damore, the two winningest goalies in Hershey Bears history, are also among the 13 netminders with at least 400 games, as is Hockey Hall of Famer and American Hockey League Hall of Famer Johnny Bower.

In recognition of earning the CCM/AHL Milestone of the Month, Cassivi will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Bears home game.
