Capitals ink ’07 AHL All-Star, Stanley Cup champion

The Washington Capitals, parent club of the AHL’s Hershey Bears, have signed free-agent right wing Joe Motzko to a two-year contract.

Motzko, 27, skated in the 2007 AHL All-Star Classic and later was a member of the 2007 Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks. He registered 28 goals and 37 assists for 65 points in 67 AHL games between Syracuse and Portland in 2006-07.

He also played in seven regular-season NHL games with Columbus, scoring his first NHL goal on Jan. 16 vs. Chicago, and in three postseason matches for Anaheim.

A native of Bemidji, Minn., Motzko has recorded 168 points (72 goals, 96 assists) in 279 career AHL games. He played four seasons of college hockey at St. Cloud State University before turning pro, notching 142 points (52 goals, 90 assists) in 154 games there.
