Capitals sign Kennedy, Newbury

The Washington Capitals, parent club of the AHL’s Hershey Bears, have signed forwards Tim Kennedy and Kris Newbury to one-year, two-way contracts.

Kennedy spent the 2013-14 season in the Coyotes organization, registering two goals and six assists in 37 NHL games with Phoenix as well as four goals and 11 assists in 30 AHL contests with Portland.

The Buffalo, N.Y., native has played in 260 AHL contests over six pro seasons, notching 60 goals and 148 assists for 208 points. Kennedy was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team in 2008-09.

In 162 NHL games, Kennedy has recorded 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points. He was originally selected by the Capitals in the sixth round in the 2005 NHL Draft.

Newbury played 63 AHL games between Adirondack and Hershey last season, totaling 18 goals and 31 assists for 49 points to go with 207 penalty minutes. In 662 career contests in the AHL, Newbury has amassed 160 goals and 328 assists for 488 points, while also racking up 1,539 penalty minutes.

A native of Brampton, Ont., Newbury has played in 76 career NHL games, registering 10 points (four goals, six assists) and 139 penalty minutes. He was drafted by San Jose in the fifth round in the 2002 NHL Draft.
