Charlotte signs Newbury to tryout

The Charlotte Checkers today announced that they have signed forward Kris Newbury to a professional tryout contract.

Newbury, who was released from his PTO with Bakersfield on Monday, will join the Checkers as they begins a six-game road trip in Stockton on Wednesday.

Newbury, 34, has three goals and two assists for five points in 14 AHL games this season. He is tied for 62nd on the AHL’s all-time scoring list with 567 career points, including 191 goals and 376 assists (41st all-time) in 788 games (38th) with the St. John’s Maple Leafs, Toronto Marlies, Hartford Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale, Grand Rapids Griffins, Hershey Bears, Adirondack Phantoms, Ontario Reign and Bakersfield Condors. He also ranks 15th all-time with 1,806 penalty minutes.

An AHL All-Star in 2007, Newbury has also played 76 career NHL games with Toronto, Detroit, the New York Rangers and Philadelphia, scoring 10 points (four goals, six assists). He was originally a fifth-round selection by San Jose in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
