Checkers’ McGinn named Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Charlotte Checkers left wing Brock McGinn has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 13, 2015.

McGinn notched three goals and two assists assist for five points in two games last week, helping the Checkers to a pair of road wins over Western Conference foes.

On Wednesday night in San Antonio, McGinn scored the game’s first goal before assisting on the game-winner with 7.5 seconds remaining in regulation, giving Charlotte a 3-2 victory over the Rampage. Then on Friday, McGinn registered another assist before posting his fourth two-goal game of the season – including the game-tying goal late in the third period and the winner in overtime – as the Checkers defeated Texas, 5-4.

A second-round choice by Carolina in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, McGinn has tallied nine goals and three assists for 12 points in 12 AHL games with Charlotte this season. He made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes on Oct. 16 and has notched two goals and an assist in 14 NHL contests as well. The 21-year-old native of Fergus, Ont., is in his second professional season after totaling 27 points (15 goals, 12 assists) in 73 games with Charlotte in 2014-15.

In recognition of his achievement, McGinn will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Checkers home game.
