Checkers sign Patrick Dwyer

The Charlotte Checkers announced Tuesday that they have signed forward Patrick Dwyer to an American Hockey League contract.

Dwyer, a 33-year-old veteran of 416 NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes from 2008-15, spent last season with MODO of the Swedish Elite League, where he scored seven points, all assists, in 33 games. During his previous nine-year stint with the Hurricanes’ organization, the 5-foot-11, 175-pound native of Spokane, Wash., recorded 93 points (42g, 51a) and 77 penalty minutes.

Dwyer recently attended training camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets on a tryout basis.

A fourth-round draft choice of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2002, Dwyer last played in the AHL with Albany during the 2009-10 season. In 296 career AHL games with Chicago and Albany, he totaled 170 points (80g, 90a) and 152 penalty minutes in 296 games.
