Coyotes recall Summers, return Rundblad

The Phoenix Coyotes announced Tuesday that they have recalled defenseman Chris Summers from the Portland Pirates and assigned defenseman David Rundblad to Portland, the Coyotes’ American Hockey League affiliate.

The 6-foot-2, 209-pound Summers has played in 41 games for Portland this season, collecting two goals, eight assists and 45 penalty minutes. Summers recently represented the Pirates at the AHL All-Star Classic in Providence, and set an AHL record in the CCM Fastest Skater event at the Skills Competition with a time of 13.324 seconds.

Summers becomes the 12th participant in this year’s All-Star Classic to be recalled to the NHL since last Monday’s All-Star Game.

Summers, who turned 25 on Tuesday, was a first-round pick (29th overall) by Phoenix in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Rundblad played three games for the Coyotes while on recall. In 32 games with Portland, Rundblad has collected six goals and 17 assists for 23 points.

Rundblad was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the first round (17th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
