Devils’ Whitney named AHL Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Albany Devils left wing Joe Whitney has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Apr. 19, 2015.

Whitney tallied three goals and four assists for seven points in three contests as Albany finished its season on a four-game winning streak.

Needing wins to keep its playoff hopes alive, Albany got two goals and an assist from Whitney in a 6-2 victory over Syracuse on Wednesday night. Whitney notched a goal and an assist on Friday as the Devils earned a 4-0 shutout win at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and he assisted on both the game-tying and game-winning goals on Saturday as Albany rallied past Hartford, 4-2, in its season finale.

Whitney completed the season as Albany’s leading scorer for the fourth year in a row, notching 23 goals and 37 assists for 60 points in 66 games. He also tied for the AHL lead with 27 power-play points, and finished tied for 15th in the league’s overall scoring race. The two-time AHL All-Star has totaled 86 goals and 123 assists for 209 points in 278 career AHL games over his four professional seasons, increasing his point production each year. Whitney, a native of Reading, Mass., also appeared in four NHL games with New Jersey in 2014-15 and scored his first career NHL goal.
