Griffins sign first-rounder Sheahan

The Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday signed center Riley Sheahan to an amateur tryout.

Detroit’s first choice (21st overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Sheahan spent the last three seasons with the University of Notre Dame (CCHA). The 20-year-old native of St. Catharines, Ont., recorded 25 points (9-16—25) in 37 games this season, giving him 64 points (20-44—64) in 114 career games with the Fighting Irish. Sheahan, who finished fourth on Notre Dame in points this season, was one of three finalists for the CCHA’s Best Defensive Forward award.

Sheahan is expected to join the Griffins for their Thursday contest in San Antonio at 8 p.m. EDT.
