Adam Almquist broke a 2-2 tie with 3:38 remaining in regulation as the Grand Rapids Griffins moved to within one win of the second round with a 4-2 win over the Houston Aeros on Wednesday night.
The Griffins, now up 2-1, can wrap up the best-of-five series with a win in Game 4 on Friday.
Erik Haula scored his first professional goal in the waning moments of the first period to give Houston a 1-0 lead, but former Aeros forward Jeff Hoggan tipped home a centering pass for a power-play goal at 5:30 of the second period to tie the score at 1-1.
Teemu Pulkkinen notched his first AHL goal at 12:42 to put the Griffins in front for the first time in the game, but this time Houston answered on David McIntyre‘s goal just 1:20 later.
Almquist’s wrist shot at 16:22 of the third period got past Mike Condon, making his first start of the series in goal for Houston after Darcy Kuemper was recalled by Minnesota earlier in the day. The Griffins capped the scoring on an empty-net goal by Luke Glendening.
Petr Mrazek (2-1) made 25 saves in the win; Condon (0-1) finished with 35 saves for the Aeros.
