Heat sign Callahan

The Abbotsford Heat announced Tuesday that they have signed free agent defenseman Joe Callahan to an AHL contract for the 2012-13 season.

Callahan, a native of Brockton, Mass., recorded three goals and 17 assists for 20 points in 60 AHL games with Hamilton in 2011-12. Over nine AHL seasons, Callahan has appeared in 510 games with the Bulldogs, Rochester Americans, Worcester Sharks, Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Portland Pirates, San Antonio Rampage, Utah Grizzlies and Springfield Falcons, totaling 22 goals and 98 assists.

A product of Yale University, Callahan has totaled four assists in 46 career NHL games with Florida, San Jose and the N.Y. Islanders. He was originally drafted by Phoenix in the third round of the 2002 NHL Draft.
