Hubbauer leads Leafs over Griffins

Matt Hubbauer scored his second goal of the season with 8:57 left in regulation, helping St. John’s to a 3-2 win over Grand Rapids at Mile One Stadium on Tuesday night.

It was the Maple Leafs’ 13th win in their last 16 games, allowing them to move to within one point of first place in the North Division.

Hubbauer finished with a goal and an assist and was named the game’s first star as St. John’s put an end to the Griffins’ perfect 7-0-0-0 road start.

Kyle Wellwood and Andy Wozniewski also scored for the Leafs, who were playing on home ice for the first time since Nov. 13. Mikael Tellqvist made 33 saves.

The teams meet again tonight.

Also Tuesday, Chicago got goals from five different players and cruised to a 5-0 win in San Antonio.

Lonny Bohonos and Karl Stewart scored 30 seconds apart to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead in the first period. Kari Lehtonen did the rest, finishing with 31 saves for his third shutout of the season.

With the win, Chicago moved two points behind Grand Rapids and Milwaukee for the top spot in the West Division.
