Hurricanes recall goalie Murphy

Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled goaltender Mike Murphy from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Murphy’s recall is on an emergency basis, after Hurricanes netminder Brian Boucher suffered a lower-body injury during practice on Monday in Calgary.

This marks the first NHL recall for Murphy, 22. The Kingston, Ont., native is 9-5-0 with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage in 15 games for the Checkers this season.

The Hurricanes’ sixth-round selection (165th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Murphy has a career record of 40-25-3 with a 2.59 goals-against average in 74 career AHL games with Albany and Charlotte.
