Hurricanes, Sharks trade defensemen

The San Jose Sharks have acquired defenseman Trevor Carrick from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Kyle Wood.

Carrick, 25, was an All-Star for the Charlotte Checkers in 2018-19, recording nine goals and 38 assists for 47 points in 71 regular-season games and making his second career All-Star Classic appearance.

In 16 postseason games, Carrick tallied three goals and nine assists for 12 points in 16 games as the Checkers won the Calder Cup.

Carrick has skated in 347 AHL games, all with Charlotte, over five pro seasons, totaling 40 goals and 141 assists for 181 points.

A fourth-round selection by Carolina in the 2012 NHL Draft, Carrick has skated in four NHL games with the Hurricanes, including one last season.

Wood, 23, notched six goals and 29 assists for 35 points with a plus-16 rating in 68 games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda last season, his third pro campaign.

An AHL All-Star and a member of the AHL All-Rookie Team in 2016-17, Wood has skated in 187 regular-season AHL games with San Jose, Tucson and Springfield, registering 23 goals and 74 assists for 97 points.

Wood was originally selected by Colorado in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
