Hurricanes sign Holmstrom

The Carolina Hurricanes, parent club of the AHL's Charlotte Checkers, signed center Ben Holmstrom to a one-year, two-way contract on Friday.

Holmstrom, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., spent his first four professional seasons in the Philadelphia Flyers organization, including the last three as captain of the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms. In 2013-14, Holmstrom recorded 13 goals and 19 assists for 32 points, along with 146 penalty minutes, in 73 games with Adirondack.

For his career, Holmstrom has notched 49 goals and 73 assists for 122 points in 256 AHL games, all with Adirondack. He has also appeared in seven career NHL contests with the Flyers, going scoreless.
