IceCaps’ King retires, joins coaching staff

The Winnipeg Jets announced today they have hired Jason King as an assistant coach for the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League.

King will join head coach Keith McCambridge and assistant coach Mark Morrison on the IceCaps bench.

King, a 31-year-old native of Corner Brook, N.L., retires following an 11-year professional playing career. He played seven years in the AHL with Manitoba (2002-06), Portland (2007-08) and St. John’s (2011-13), notching 129 goals and 124 assists for 253 points in 335 AHL games. He also skated in 59 NHL contests with Vancouver and Anaheim.

“I’m grateful to the Jets and the IceCaps for this opportunity and I look forward to the challenge,” said King. “It’s particularly gratifying to be able to take this next step here, in my home province.”

“Jason is a high-character individual who will be a valuable resource to our young prospects,” said McCambridge. “Although he will be missed in our lineup, I am looking forward to having him as a member of our coaching staff.”

“Jason is a proud Newfoundlander and was a great player and leader for the IceCaps,” said IceCaps president and CEO Danny Williams. “But he’s also a great family man and has represented the organization with class in the community. We are very pleased to be able to keep Jason in the fold and we wish him the best.”
