Islanders add Bootland

The New York Islanders, parent club of the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, have signed right wing Darryl Bootland to a one-year contract.

Bootland, 25, spent the last five seasons in the Detroit Red Wings organziation, totaling 72 goals and 68 assists for 140 points, along with 1,164 penalty minutes, in 293 AHL games with Grand Rapids.

Last season, Bootland amassed 18 goals, 13 assists and 222 PIM in 68 games for the Griffins, while also appearing in six NHL contests for Detroit. He set career highs in 2005-06 with 27 goals, 29 assists, 56 points and 390 PIM in 77 games.

Bootland’s signing is the fifth announced by the Islanders in recent days, all with potential effect on their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport. Over the weekend, the Islanders announced the signings of defenseman Matthew Spiller and goaltender Joey MacDonald.

Spiller, 24, has been signed to a one-year contract. A second-round draft pick by Phoenix in 2001, Spiller compiled one goal, seven assists and 187 penalty minutes in 80 AHL games for San Antonio in 2006-07.

The 6-foot-5, 233-pound blueliner has registered eight goals, 23 assists and 546 PIM in 249 career AHL contests over the last four seasons. He also had one assist and 67 PIM in 59 NHL games with the Coyotes.

MacDonald, 27, made his NHL debut in 2006-07, appearing in a total of 15 games with Detroit and Boston and posting a record of 3-7-2. He signed a two-year deal with the Islanders.

MacDonald has played 164 career regular-season AHL games, all with Grand Rapids, going 88-57-7 with 16 shutouts. He skated in the AHL All-Star Classic in 2005, and earned a share of the AHL’s Harry "Hap" Holmes Award for team goaltending with Grand Rapids in 2002-03.

Last week, the Islanders announced that they have signed right wing Tim Jackman and left wing Kip Brennan to one-year deals.

Jackman, 26, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound native of Minot, N.D., spent last season as a member of the Los Angeles Kings organization playing five games with the Kings and 69 games with their AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, where he compiled 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points and 143 penalty minutes.

During the 2007 Calder Cup Playoffs, Jackman scored three goals and three assists in 16 games for the Monarchs. Over the course his AHL career, Jackman has registered 74 goals and 71 assists for 145 points with a total of 510 penalty minutes in 351 games. In 32 NHL games with Columbus, Phoenix and Los Angeles, Jackman has a total of one goal and two assists with 47 penalty minutes.

Brennan, 26, played 27 AHL games between Hershey and Toronto last season, recording four goals, two assists and 73 PIM.

Brennan, who stands at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, has played in 58 career NHL games, registering a goal and an assist while racking up 210 penalty minutes with Los Angeles, Atlanta and Anaheim. Over the course of his AHL career, Brennan has recorded 22 goals, 15 assists and 949 PIM in 188 games.
