Lessard tapped for weekly award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Iowa Stars right wing Junior Lessard has been named the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending January 8, 2006. In two games, Lessard scored three goals and three assists, including a five point eruption on Saturday against the Wolves.

After being held to one goal in a 4-2 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday, Lessard scored two goals and added three assists, figuring into all five Iowa goals as the Stars dominated the Wolves 5-1 in Chicago. The five points set a new Stars record for points in a game. Four of his points came in the second period, which also set a Stars record for points in a single period. His second goal of that game would prove to be the game winning goal.

In recognition of his achievement, Lessard will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Stars home game.

A native of St. Joseph de Beauce, Quebec, the 25-year-old is now second on the Stars in scoring with 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 22 games. Lessard is in his second professional season after spending four years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and was the winner of the 2004 Hobey Baker Award.
