Lightning acquire Downie from Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Friday evening that they have acquired defenseman Matt Carle and the San Jose Sharks’ third-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Steve Eminger, Steve Downie and Tampa Bay’s fourth-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Downie, 21, had one goal and seven assists for eight points in just four AHL games for the Philadelphia Phantoms this season. He was also scoreless in six games with the Flyers.

A first-round draft pick in 2005, Downie tallied five goals and 12 assists in 21 games with the Phantoms as a rookie in 2007-08. He added 12 points (6g, 6a) in 32 games with the Flyers.

Carle, 24, recorded a goal and an assist for two points and six penalty minutes in 12 games for the Lightning this season. In 163 career NHL regular season games over the last four seasons (2005-06 through 2008-09), Carle has registered 17 goals and 48 assists for 65 points and 76 penalty minutes.

Eminger, an AHL All-Star in 2005 playing for Portland, has tallied six goals and 39 assists in 224 career NHL games with Philadelphia and Washington.
