Maple Leafs acquire Smith from Avalanche

The Toronto Maple Leafs, parent club of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, announced today that the team has acquired forward Colin Smith and a fourth-round selection in the 2016 Entry Draft from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Shawn Matthias.

Smith, 22, has registered 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points in 54 games with Colorado’s American Hockey League affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, this season — good for third on the team in scoring. The third-year pro has totaled 33 goals and 66 assists for 99 points in 183 career AHL contests with San Antonio and Lake Erie.

An Edmonton native, Smith skated in one NHL game with Colorado in 2014-15. He was originally selected by the Avalanche in the seventh round (192nd overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
