Maple Leafs re-sign Marlies captain

The Toronto Maple Leafs, parent club of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, have re-signed forward Trevor Smith to a one-year contract.

Smith played 28 games for the Maple Leafs last season, collecting nine points (four goals, five assists) with four penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound forward also collected 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 24 AHL games while serving as captain of the Marlies in 2013-14. He added three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 14 playoff games as the Marlies reached the Western Conference Finals.

A 29-year-old native of Ottawa, Ont., Smith has appeared in 445 career AHL games with Toronto, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Norfolk, Springfield, Syracuse and Bridgeport, registering 151 goals and 190 assists for 341 points. In addition, he has 15 goals and 32 assists for 47 points in 57 career playoff games, and won a Calder Cup championship with Norfolk in 2012. Smith also represented Norfolk at the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic.

Smith has played 52 career NHL games with Toronto, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and the New York Islanders, totaling seven goals and eight assists.
