McCarthy acquired by Atlanta, assigned to Wolves

The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired defenseman Steve McCarthy from the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations, according to Thrashers executive vice president and general manager Don Waddell. McCarthy will report to the Chicago Wolves (AHL).

McCarthy, 28, has appeared in 302 career NHL games with Chicago, Vancouver and Atlanta, recording 55 points (17 goals, 38 assists) and 168 penalty minutes. The 6-1, 210-pound defenseman set a career high in assists (12) and tied his career high in points (16) in 46 games with the Thrashers during the 2006-07 season.

The Trail, B.C., native, appeared in 18 games with Salavat Yulayev Ufa (KHL) in 2008-09, recording 16 penalty minutes.

McCarthy was originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, 23rd overall, of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He played parts of three seasons (2000-03) in the AHL with the Norfolk Admirals, totaling eight goals and 31 assists for 39 points in 103 games.
