Minnesota native Smith signed by Wild

The Minnesota Wild, parent club of the AHL’s Houston Aeros, on Wednesday announced the signing of free-agent center Wyatt Smith to a one-year contract

Smith split last season between the New York Islanders and the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He tied a career-high with 42 NHL games played, notching eight assists, and totaled 29 points (13 goals, 16 assists) in 39 games with Bridgeport.

The 5-foot-11, 198-pound native of Thief River Falls, Minn., was a member of Milwaukee’s 2004 Calder Cup championship team. In 351 AHL games spanning seven seasons, Smith has totaled 107 goals and 143 assists for 250 points.

The former standout at the University of Minnesota has 125 games of NHL experience, recording 23 points (7g, 16a).
