Monarchs’ Jones named Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Manchester Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 13, 2013.

Jones won three consecutive starts – all on the road – last week, making 87 saves on 91 shots (3-0-0, 1.27, .956) to propel the Monarchs to the top of the Eastern Conference.

On Wednesday night in Lewiston, Jones stopped 25 of 27 shots and four of five shootout attempts in Manchester’s 3-2 win over Portland. On Friday, he made seven of his 24 saves during overtime to help the Monarchs to a 3-2 shootout victory at Providence. And on Saturday, Jones made 38 saves for his 11th career shutout, a 3-0 decision in Bridgeport.

Jones, 23, is 3-0-1 so far in 2013-14 with a 1.41 goals-against average and a .951 save percentage in four starts for the Monarchs. The fourth-year pro from North Vancouver, B.C., shows a career record of 71-54-8 (2.44, .921) in 140 AHL appearances, all with Manchester.

In recognition of his achievement, Jones will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Monarchs home game.
