Monsters goalie Berra scores in win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … Lake Erie Monsters goaltender Reto Berra made American Hockey League history on Friday night when he became just the 11th goaltender in the AHL’s 79-year history to be credited with scoring a goal.

Berra’s empty-net tally helped Lake Erie to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Wolves at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

With Chicago goaltender Matt Climie on the bench for an extra attacker late in regulation, Berra shot the puck the length of the ice and into the vacated net to give Lake Erie a 4-1 lead at 18:34 of the third period. Berra is the seventh AHL goalie to actually shot the puck into the opposition net.

Berra was making his Monsters debut after joining the team on a conditioning assignment from the parent Colorado Avalanche earlier this week. He also stopped 20 of 21 shots in the victory.
