Monsters sink West-leading Wolves, 7-5

LAKE ERIE 7, CHICAGO 5
Lake Erie notched three goals in the third period on its way to a 7-5 victory over Western Conference-leading Chicago on Tuesday at the Quicken Loans Arena.

Eric Healey was one of three Monsters to post three points on the night (1-2-3), and Brent Kelly (2-1-3) tallied the eventual game-winning goal unassisted at 4:51 of the third period.

The teams combined for six goals in the first period, three for each side. Jesse Schultz, Jason Krog, and Joey Crabb scored for the Wolves, while Chris Stewart, Tom Fritsche, and Wyatt Smith lit the lamp for Lake Erie. Fritsche’s goal was the first of his AHL career.

Lake Erie’s Brad Richardson and Chicago’s Darren Haydar exchanged goals in the second period, making it a 4-4 game entering the final 20 minutes.

Healey put the Monsters out in front at 4:10, and Kelly made it 6-4 just 41 seconds later. That goal would prove key, though, as Chicago’s Jordan LaVallee lit the lamp at 19:20.

Kelly added an empty netter at 19:26 to account for the final score. Monsters goaltender Mike Wall picked up the victory with 28 saves on the night.
