Phantoms honor former captain, coach Stevens

It was a special night in Philadelphia as former team captain and head coach John Stevens was inducted into the Phantoms’ hall of fame in front of 10,330 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum on Sunday evening.

Stevens was a member of the Phantoms organization as a player and a coach for the first 10 years of the franchise from its inception in 1996.  He led the Phantoms to its first Calder Cup as team captain in 1998, and would later help Philadelphia capture the Calder Cup for second time in 2005 as head coach.

Stevens’ American Hockey League career has spanned 20 years as player and coach.  In addition to his two Calder Cups in Philadelphia, he has two other championships to his credit, winning his first as a member of the Hershey Bears in 1988, and with Springfield in 1991.

He was named an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers in June of 2006 until he took over head coaching duties of the Phantoms’ parent organization in October.
