SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that San Antonio Rampage broadcaster Dan Weiss has been selected as the recipient of the James H. Ellery Memorial Award for the 2013-14 season.
The James H. Ellery Memorial Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding media coverage of the American Hockey League. This season marks the award’s 50th year; it was first presented in 1964-65 and honors the late Jim Ellery, who served the American Hockey League for 17 years as league secretary and publicity director until his death in 1964.
Weiss, the Rampage’s manager of broadcast and media operations, has served as the “Voice of the Rampage” since 2009. During his time in San Antonio, he has become an ambassador for hockey in a non-traditional market, helping to grow the Rampage team as well as the American Hockey League.
In addition to his high-quality calls of every Rampage game on the radio and over the Internet – along with seven games that were televised on Fox Sports Southwest in 2013-14 – Weiss is constantly connecting with fans, posting interviews and highlights on the team’s Web site and sharing information and analysis from around the league through digital and social media platforms.
Weiss is also deeply involved in the strengthening the Rampage’s bonds to the local San Antonio community, most notably developing and overseeing the Face Off Against Kids Cancer program that continues to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer.
In operation since 1936, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 88 percent of today’s NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the 13th year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2013-14.
