Rangers, Red Wings make trade

The New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Ryan Sproul from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Matt Puempel.

Sproul, 24, has appeared in five AHL games for the Grand Rapids Griffins this season, collecting one goal and three assists.

A second-round draft choice by Detroit in 2011, Sproul spent all of last season with the Red Wings, recording one goal and six assists in 27 games. He also skated in one NHL game in 2013-14.

Sproul has appeared in 220 career AHL games with Grand Rapids, totaling 29 goals and 66 assists for 95 points.

Puempel, 24, has one goal and two assists in five AHL games for the Hartford Wolf Pack this year.

A first-round draft choice by Ottawa in 2011, Puempel spent all of the 2016-17 season in the NHL, recording six goals and three assists in 40 games between the Rangers and Senators. In 79 career NHL contests, Puempel has tallied 10 goals and five assists.

Puempel has skated in 175 games in the AHL with Hartford and Binghamton, registering 61 goals and 53 assists for 114 points — including a 30-goal rookie season in 2013-14.
