Reign clinch playoff berth

The Ontario Reign have clinched a berth in the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs, the first Western Conference club to punch a postseason ticket.

The Reign wrapped up a playoff trip when San Jose dropped a 3-1 decision to San Diego on Sunday evening.

Ontario, atop the Pacific Division with a record of 39-16-4-1 (83 points, .692), joins Toronto on the Calder Cup dance card. Fourteen more spots are up for grabs with three weeks remaining in the AHL’s regular season.

The Reign head to the Calder Cup Playoffs in their first season in the league; the Los Angeles Kings’ top affiliate qualified for the postseason 13 times in 14 years while based in Manchester, N.H., winning the Calder Cup last spring.
