Reign sign Newbury to AHL pact

The Ontario Reign, primary affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, have signed center Kris Newbury to an American Hockey League contract for the 2015-16 season.

Newbury, 33, joins the Reign after spending the 2014-15 season with the Hershey Bears. The native of Brampton, Ont., collected 48 points (18 goals, 30 assists) and a team-leading 171 penalty minutes in 68 regular-season games, and added four assists and 16 penalty minutes in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games for the Bears.

On Oct. 31, 2014, Newbury became the 88th player in AHL history to reach 500 career points.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound pivot, an AHL All-Star in 2007, has appeared in 730 AHL games with the St. John’s Maple Leafs, Toronto Marlies, Grand Rapids Griffins, Hartford Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale, Adirondack Phantoms and Hershey Bears, totaling 178 goals and 358 assists for 536 points. He also ranks 21st all-time with 1,710 penalty minutes.

Newbury has also recorded four goals, six assists and 139 PIM in 76 NHL games with Toronto, Detroit, the N.Y. Rangers and Philadelphia.

Newbury was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
