River Rats edge Senators in shootout, 3-2

Dwight Helminen scored in regulation and in the shootout for Albany as the River Rats took a 3-2 road win over Binghamton in the Senators’ annual Thanksgiving Day game at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Michael Ryan netted the winning shootout goal in the sixth round for the River Rats, who now have a point in three straight games (2-0-0-1).

Helminen put the Rats on top 1-0 with a power play goal at 7:09 of the first period, but Binghamton’s Peter Regin tied it at 9:30 with his first career North American goal.

Jakub Petruzalek regained the River Rats’ lead just 36 seconds later with an unassisted goal, and the game remained 2-1 in favor of Albany through the second period.

Senators captain Denis Hamel tallied the equalizer on the power play 5:43 into the third stanza, a goal which ultimately forced overtime.

After a scoreless extra session, Helminen and Ryan scored in the shootout to give Albany the victory. River Rats goaltender Justin Peters made 34 saves through regulation and overtime before denying five of six Binghamton tries in the shootout.

Ilya Zubov had the lone shootout goal for the Senators, who fell to 1-4-1-1 in their last seven contests.
