Samson named CCM/AHL Player of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that St. John’s IceCaps right wing Jerome Samson has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Apr. 20, 2014.
Samson tallied two goals and five assists for seven points, along with a plus-5 rating, in two games last week as the IceCaps closed out their regular season with a pair of road wins.
On Friday night, Samson notched four points, including a goal and three assists, and was named the game’s first star as St. John’s blanked Worcester, 6-0. Then on Saturday, Samson picked up a goal and two assists all in the third period – including a helper on the game-winning goal with 5:46 left – to help the IceCaps past Portland, 5-4.
A seventh-year pro, Samson finished the 2013-14 regular season with 27 goals and 29 assists for 56 points in 68 games with St. John’s, topping the 20-goal mark for the sixth time in his AHL career and tying for second in IceCaps team scoring. The 26-year-old native of Greenfield Park, Que., signed as a free agent with the Winnipeg Jets on July 6, 2013, after spending his first six seasons in the Carolina Hurricanes organization. In 424 career AHL games with St. John’s, Charlotte and Albany, Samson has recorded 160 goals and 176 assists for 336 points. He has also skated in 46 career NHL games with Carolina, registering two goals and seven assists.
In recognition of his achievement, Samson will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming IceCaps home game.
