Senators snag All-Star MVP Bishop

Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has acquired goaltender Ben Bishop from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Ottawa’s second-round draft pick in the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Bishop, 25, has spent the entire 2011-12 season with the Peoria Rivermen, the Blues’ American Hockey League affiliate. Bishop has a record of 24-14-0 in 38 games with the Rivermen, posting a league-leading six shutouts, a 2.26 goals-against average and .928 save percentage. Bishop’s 24 wins are also tied for the AHL lead.

The 6-7, 215-pound native of Denver was named the most valuable player of the 2012 AHL All-Star Game, stopping 10 of 11 shots in the third period and leading the Western Conference to an 8-7 shootout victory. He was also named Reebok Top Goaltender during the All-Star Skills Competition.

A fourth-year pro, Bishop has made 159 career appearances in the AHL, posting a record of 81-64-8 with nine shutouts for Peoria.

Bishop has appeared in 13 career NHL games, all with St. Louis, posting a 4-5-1 record with one shutout, a 2.83 goals-against-average and .893 save percentage. He was drafted by the Blues in the third round (85th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
