Sens drop thriller but clinch playoff berth

The Binghamton Senators clinched a berth in the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs on Sunday evening but wound up on the short end of a thrilling 1-0 overtime decision to the Hershey Bears at Giant Center.

The Senators are headed to the postseason for the second year in a row, and will be looking for their first playoff win since taking home the Calder Cup championship in 2011.

Andrew Hammond made 33 saves in regulation on Sunday to keep the game scoreless through 60 minutes and give Binghamton the single standings point it needed to clinch. Hammond finished with 38 stops before Dane Byers scored the game’s only game at 2:24 of OT.

Philipp Grubauer stopped all 41 shots in net for the Bears, who remain tied with Norfolk eighth place in the Eastern Conference heading into next week’s critical two-game set with the Admirals in Virginia.
