Skalde named assistant coach in Norfolk

The Anaheim Ducks, parent club of the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals, have hired Jarrod Skalde as an assistant coach for the Admirals.

Skalde will work alongside head coach Trent Yawney and fellow assistant coach Marty Wilford with the Ducks’ American Hockey League affiliate in Norfolk, Va.

Skalde joins the Admirals after earning the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year in 2012-13 with the Cincinnati Cyclones. In his third season as bench boss with the club, Skalde led the Cyclones to a North Division title with a 42-22-8 record for 92 points -– a 13-point improvement over the previous season.

A 42-year-old native of Niagara Falls, Ont., Skalde guided Cincinnati to a 110-79-27 record over three seasons. During that time, he saw 68 players earn promotions to the AHL.

Selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Skalde played 115 NHL games between New Jersey, Anaheim, Calgary, San Jose, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia. The forward’s 575-game AHL career included stops in Utica, Saint John, Baltimore, Kentucky, Chicago, Philadelphia, Utah, Springfield and San Antonio.

Skalde and his wife, Erin, have two children, 15-year-old daughter True and 10-year-old son Skate.
