SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League has named Philadelphia Phantoms defenseman John Slaney as the recipient of the CCM/AHL Milestone of the Month award for January.

On Jan. 21, Slaney became the first defenseman – and 72nd player overall – in the 71-year history of the American Hockey League to reach 500 points in his AHL career when he registered an assist in a game against the Norfolk Admirals at the Wachovia Spectrum.

The historic point came on a power play with 7:47 remaining in the second period as Slaney set up a goal by Stefan Ruzicka.

In his 15th professional season and seventh with Philadelphia, Slaney finished the month with 160 goals and 341 assists for 501 points in 599 career AHL games. The Phantoms captain became the AHL’s all-time leading scorer among defensemen on Dec. 30, 2005.

In recognition of earning the CCM/AHL Milestone of the Month, Slaney will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming home game.
