Travis Morin, the Texas Stars’ all-time leader in goals, assists, points and games and the only player to skate in each of the franchise’s 10 seasons, has announced his retirement from professional hockey.
Morin will be honored by the club and his number 23 will be retired on Oct. 19 when Texas hosts Grand Rapids.
“On behalf of the Dallas Stars and Texas Stars, I’d like to thank Travis for his dedication to the organization across the last decade and congratulate him on an extraordinary career,” said Texas Stars general manager Scott White. “From day one, Travis helped forge a winning culture for our organization. There is no doubt that he will be remembered as a cornerstone of this franchise and it has been a privilege to be part of his career.”
Morin, 35, joined the organization before Texas’s inaugural season in 2009 and went on to collect 175 goals, 385 assists and 560 points for the AHL Stars, helping them to three Calder Cup Finals appearances and the 2014 championship. Morin’s 686 regular-season games played for Texas place him eighth all-time in games for any single AHL franchise.
Morin had one of the most decorated seasons in AHL history in 2013-14. After representing Texas in the AHL All-Star Classic, a showcase event against Farjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League, Morin went on to win the league scoring title and regular-season MVP honors before leading the Stars to the Calder Cup title and capturing the league’s playoff MVP award as well.
A native of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Morin served as Stars captain from 2015-17, and led the team in scoring five times.
Morin, who had two brief stints with the Hershey Bears before joining Texas, played a total of 691 regular-season games in the AHL over his 12 professional seasons, totaling 175 goals and 386 assists for 561 points.
In postseason play, Morin registered 23 goals and 41 assists for 64 points in 87 games as the Stars reached the Finals in 2010, 2014 and 2018.
Drafted by the Washington Capitals in 2004, Morin played a total of 13 games in the NHL, all with Dallas (one assist).
Morin will transition to a front-office position with Texas, serving as a skills development coach in hockey operations as well as in a business development and community outreach role.
