Enters his second full professional season in 2013-14. Smith was drafted by Dallas in the fifth round (128th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the first native Texan to be selected by the Stars. He signed a two-year entry level contract with Dallas on March 21, 2012. Smith made his pro and AHL debut with Texas on March 23, 2012 at Oklahoma City and recorded his first career pro and AHL point with one assist on March 29, 2012 vs. Hamilton. He scored his first pro goal on October 24, 2012 in his ECHL debut for the Idaho Steelheads against the Ontario Reign. Smith led Idaho in goals (27) and points (50) in 38 ECHL games during the regular season, leading all ECHL rookies in goals and finishing second amongst all ECHL rookies in plus-minus (+24). He had 12 points (7 goals, 5 assists) in 17 Kelly Cup Playoff games to help the Steelheads reach the Western Conference Finals before being eliminated by the Stockton Thunder in five games. Smith scored his first career AHL goal on January 18, 2013 at the Chicago Wolves. He played four years of NCAA Division college hockey for Colgate University of the ECAC. In 153 career NCAA games Smith had 160 points (79 goals, 81 assists) and 110 penalty minutes. During his senior year (2011-12) he led the NCAA in goals (36) and shorthanded goals (6) and was third in points (57). Smith was named 2011-12 ECAC Hockey MVP and to the ECAC Hockey First Team, a Hobey Baker finalist and was named a First Team All-American.
