Enters his first professional season in 2013-14. Montgomery was undrafted and played four years of major junior hockey for the Kootenay Ice of the WHL. In 243 career WHL games he registered 119 points (65 goals, 54 assists) and 328 penalty minutes. During his second season with Kootenay, he helped the Ice win the 2011 WHL Championship, beating Portland in five games in the Finals, earning a trip to the 2011 Memorial Cup Tournament in Mississauga, Ontario. Montgomery played in all four Memorial Cup games, helping Kootenay reach the semifinals before losing to hosts Mississauga St. Michaelâ€™s Majors. He appeared in 23 career WHL playoff games, recording six points (3 goals, 3 assists) and 12 penalty minutes. Montgomery was junior teammates with current Stars forward Cody Eakin and former Stars forward Matt Fraser. Last season he led the Ice in power play goals (18), ranked second on the team in goals (31), tied for second in plus-minus (+11), third in points (48) and four in penalty minutes (76). Montgomery played in all five of Kootenayâ€™s WHL playoff games, leading the team in assists (2) and tied for the team lead in points (3), however, they lost their first round series to the Edmonton Oil Kings in five games. Immediately after Kootenay was eliminated from the playoffs he signed a standard AHL contract with Texas for the 2013-14 season and then joined the team on April 2, 2013 on an amateur tryout contract (ATO). Montgomery practiced with the Stars for several weeks before being released from his ATO on April 26, 2013 without making his pro debut.
