Tambellini named Rbk/AHL Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Bridgeport Sound Tigers left wing Jeff Tambellini has been named the Rbk/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 30, 2007. Tambellini scored five goals and added two assists for seven points in three games on the week.

Tambellini began the post-Christmas schedule with four points in a 5-4 win over Hershey on Wednesday, including an assist on the game-winning goal with 1:46 remaining in the third period. He scored both Bridgeport goals in a 4-2 loss to Providence on Friday night, and picked up the insurance tally in a 2-0 win over Hartford on Saturday.

In recognition of his achievement, Tambellini will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Sound Tigers home game.

A first-round draft pick (27th overall) by Los Angeles in 2003, Tambellini ranks third in the American Hockey League with 18 goals, eighth with 35 points and tied for first with four shorthanded goals in 29 games for the Sound Tigers this season. The 23-year-old Calgary native has also appeared in eight NHL contests with the parent New York Islanders in 2007-08. Tambellini, an AHL All-Star as a rookie in 2006, has recorded 73 goals and 77 assists for 150 points in 135 career AHL games, along with 13 points in 56 NHL contests.

Other nominees for Rbk/AHL Player of the Week include Chicago right wing Darren Haydar, Hartford left wing Nigel Dawes, Iowa left wing James Neal, Lowell goaltender Frank Doyle, Manchester center Gabe Gauthier, Philadelphia right wing Steve Downie, Portland center Geoff Platt, Providence left wing Pascal Pelletier, Quad City right wing Grant Stevenson, Rochester center Marek Zagrapan, Rockford right wing Troy Brouwer, San Antonio left wing Matt Murley, Syracuse goaltender Craig Kowalski, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton center Tim Brent and Worcester center Josh Prudden.
