LAKE ERIE 1, HOUSTON 0
Goaltender Tyler Weiman made 27 saves to earn Lake Erie’s second shutout in as many nights as the Monsters eked out a 1-0 road win over Houston on Wednesday at the Toyota Center. Chris Durno scored the game’s lone goal for Lake Erie, which has now won three straight games overall.
Durno’s team-leading fifth goal and eighth point of the season came on the power play at 12:59 of the opening period, with assists going to Philippe Dupuis and Darren Haydar. It marked the first power play goal against of the season for Houston, which entered the contest 24-for-24 on the penalty kill.
Durno has now netted a goal in three straight games (4-1-5), and Haydar extended his scoring streak to four games (2-3-5).
Weiman, who led the AHL last season with eight shutouts, evened his record at 3-3-0 for the season and helped hold Houston scoreless on five power play tries.
Fellow goaltender Trevor Cann posted a 24-save shutout in Tuesday’s 4-0 win at Texas. The Monsters will conclude their three-game swing through the Lone Star State with a rematch against the Stars on Friday.
ROCHESTER 4, BINGHAMTON 2
Rochester continued its fast start to the season with a 4-2 win over visiting Binghamton on Wednesday at the Blue Cross Arena.
Victor Oreskovich, Evgeny Dadonov, and Graham Mink each posted a first-period goal and assist for the Americans, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead after opening 20 minutes. Oreskovich, a former second-round draft pick, was making his professional debut.
Veteran Mike York then added a power play goal early in the second frame to make it a 4-0 game.
The Senators tried to chip away at their deficit, receiving markers from Ryan Keller at 10:46 of the second period and defenseman Geoff Kinrade 5:33 into the third. But Binghamton could get no closer and fell to 0-3-2-0 in its last five outings.
Goaltender Tyler Plante earned the victory with 28 saves for the Amerks, who won their fourth straight game and moved to 5-1-1-0 on the young campaign.
PEORIA 4, ROCKFORD 1
A three-goal first period propelled Rockford to a 4-1 win over visiting Rockford on Wednesday at the MetroCentre.
The Rivermen outshot Rockford by an 18-2 count in the opening stanza and received goals from Barry Tallackson (5:32), Yan Stastny (7:29), and Nicholas Drazenovic (18:29) to build their 3-0 edge.
Stastny finished with a goal and a helper for Peoria, and Chris Porter added a fourth goal late in the third frame.
Peoria goaltender Ben Bishop earned the win in net with 28 saves on 29 shots. His shutout bid was broken up when new acquisition Kyle Greentree netted his first goal in an IceHogs uniform at 7:12 of the third period.
ABBOTSFORD 5, TORONTO 3
Five different players scored as Abbotsford took a 5-3 win over Toronto at the Entertainment & Sports Centre, avenging a 3-1 loss to the Marlies a night earlier.
Jason Jaffray and J.D. Watt each posted a goal and an assist for the Heat, who also received tallies from Keith Seabrook, Carsen Germyn, and Jamie Lundmark.
David Van der Gulik contributed a pair of assists in the victory, and Abbotsford goaltender David Shantz stopped 25 of 28 shots in his first appearance of the season.
Jiri Tlusty registered a shorthanded goal and an assist for the Marlies, while Tyler Bozak and Dale Mitchell each potted power play scores in the loss.
Abbotsford now embarks on a six-game road trip, beginning on Friday in Grand Rapids.
