Former Hershey Bears defenseman Patrick Wellar has been named the club’s assistant coach, joining the staff of new head coach Spencer Carbery.

Wellar, 34, spent parts of six seasons with the Bears from 2008 to 2014, and was a member of their Calder Cup championship team in 2010. He appeared in a total of 260 regular-season games and 36 postseason contests with Hershey.

Wellar served as a player/assistant coach for two seasons in the ECHL with Utah (2014-15) and Alaska (2015-16), and was a full-time assistant with Cincinnati in 2016-17 and Reading in 2017-18.

Wellar and Carbery were teammates in South Carolina (ECHL), winning a league championship together in 2009.

Originally a third-round draft pick by Washington in 2002, Wellar played 306 games in the AHL with Hershey, Toronto, Peoria and Worcester.
