Worcester signs defenseman Taormina

The Worcester Sharks announced on Friday that the club has signed defenseman Matt Taormina to an AHL contract for the 2014-15 season.

Taormina, 27, enters his sixth professional season after spending last year with Syracuse (AHL), Tampa Bay (NHL) and Springfield (AHL). The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defenseman recorded nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points in 58 AHL games between Syracuse and Springfield, and appeared in seven NHL games with the Lightning last season.

Taormina has compiled 31 goals and 90 assists for 121 points in 232 career AHL contests with Binghamton, Lowell/Albany, Syracuse and Springfield. The native of Warren, Mich., has also recorded four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 56 NHL games with New Jersey and Tampa Bay.

A product of Providence College, Taormina set his current career highs in goals (10), assists (40) and points (50) as a rookie in 2009-10.
