The first round of the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs ends tonight as Grand Rapids hosts Manitoba in the decisive Game 5 of their Central Division semifinal series… The Griffins finished one point ahead of the Moose in the regular season standings, enough to earn home-ice advantage in this game… Facing elimination in Game 4 on Thursday, Grand Rapids got 25 saves from Jared Coreau (1-1, 0.62, .973) in a 3-0 victory… Coreau, who was making his first start of the series, improved to 18-7 (2.60, .917) in 25 career Calder Cup Playoff appearances and shut out the Moose for the third time in his last three starts against them… Ben Street (4-3-7) scored again for the Griffins in Game 4, his sixth consecutive game with a goal going back to the regular season… Matthew Ford (2-3-5) also scored in Game 4, and Brian Lashoff (1-2-3) secured the win with an empty-netter… The Moose have scored nine goals in their two wins in the series, and totaled one goal in their two losses… Ten different skaters have scored Manitoba’s 10 goals in the series… Chase De Leo (1-5-6) leads the team in scoring after his four-point effort back in Game 3… Eric Comrie (2-2, 3.32, .908) has stopped 66 of 71 shots (.930) since being pulled after two periods of Game 2… Grand Rapids is 3-for-15 (20.0 percent) in the series on the power play; Manitoba is 2-for-13 (15.4 percent)… The Griffins’ Eric Tangradi (2-2-4) and the Moose’s Michael Spacek (1-2-3) will both miss Game 5 tonight due to AHL suspensions… Manitoba is looking for its first win of the season following a shutout loss (0-3-0)… This is the 175th winner-take-all playoff game in AHL history… Home teams are 108-66 (.621), including 16-4 since 2014… The Griffins are 4-3 in winner-take-all Calder Cup Playoff games, including 4-2 at home and 1-1 against the Moose… Manitoba is also 4-3 in winner-take-all games, including 3-3 on the road… Tonight’s winner moves on to face Rockford in the Central Division Finals.

In yesterday’s Stanley Cup Playoff action, Kevin Fiala scored in double overtime and two-time AHL All-Star Pekka Rinne made a playoff career-high 46 saves in Nashville’s 5-4 victory over Winnipeg… Viktor Arvidsson recorded a goal and two assists for the Predators, Ryan Johansen scored twice and 2010 AHL All-Star P.K. Subban added a goal and an assist… 2007 AHL All-Star Dustin Byfuglien recorded a goal and an assist for the Jets… Jakub Vrana‘s first career Stanley Cup Playoff goal was the game-winner in Washington’s 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh… Vrana tallied 8-6-14 in 21 games during the 2016 AHL postseason, helping the Hershey Bears reach the Calder Cup Finals.

April 30, 1989 – Adam Graves scores 10:31 into overtime as the Adirondack Red Wings beat Hershey, 2-1, to become the second team in AHL history to rally from an 0-3 series deficit and advance.

April 30, 1967 – The Pittsburgh Hornets win their final AHL game, capturing the Calder Cup on Billy Harris’s overtime goal against Rochester at the Civic Arena… The expansion Penguins would begin play in the NHL in the fall.
