Instead of facing elimination tonight, Toronto has a chance to tie the North Division Finals after a stunning 5-3 victory over Syracuse in Game 3 last night… Down a goal and inside of two minutes remaining, the Marlies scored three times in 33 seconds to trim the Crunch’s series lead to two games to one… Brendan Leipsic (3-1-4) scored off a rebound to tie the game at 18:04 of the third period, and Carl Grundstrom (2-1-3) buried another rebound just 18 seconds later to give the Marlies their first lead since early in Game 1… Kasperi Kapanen (2-4-6) then broke in alone and scored at 18:37 to secure the victory… Leipsic’s goal was his first point of the series… Grundstrom, the Maple Leafs’ second-round draft pick in 2016, has three points in his first two AHL games… Kapanen also had two assists in Game 3 for a three-point night… Andreas Johnsson (5-0-5) scored a pair of goals for Toronto in the second period, his third and fourth of the series already… Adam Erne (1-3-4), Byron Froese (3-5-8) and Erik Condra (4-4-8) scored for the Crunch, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end… Froese has 2-4-6 through three games of the series against his former team… Kasimir Kaskisuo (3-1, 2.38, .903) made 22 saves as Toronto improved to 3-0 at home this postseason… Mike McKenna (5-2, 2.53, .903) stopped 29 of 34 shots in Game 3 for Syracuse… The Marlies became the sixth team this postseason to win a game it had trailed with less than 4:00 to go in regulation (see below).

The Pacific Division Finals resume tonight with Game 3 in San Diego with the Gulls and Barracuda all square at one win apiece… After losing Game 1 in overtime, San Jose rebounded with a 5-1 victory in Game 2 on Saturday… Ryan Carpenter (6-4-10) recorded a goal and an assist for the Barracuda; Carpenter leads the AHL in playoff goals and is tied for the league lead in points… Nick DeSimone (1-4-5), Buddy Robinson (4-2-6), Adam Helewka (1-0-1) and Barclay Goodrow (2-3-5) also scored for San Jose in Game 2, and Timo Meier (2-3-5), Tim Heed (2-3-5) and Julius Bergman (0-5-5) notched two assists each… Troy Grosenick (4-3, 2.39, .910) made 31 saves in the win, his most in a game this postseason… Sam Carrick (2-2-4), who tallied the only goal for the Gulls in Game 2, was recalled by Anaheim yesterday in advance of the Ducks’ Game 7 against Edmonton tonight… Jhonas Enroth (4-3, 2.37, 933) made 30 saves for the Gulls on Saturday but allowed five goals in a game for the first time this season… Dustin Tokarski stopped all seven shots he faced in relief in Game 2, his first postseason appearance since starting the last five games of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals with Montreal in 2014… San Diego has won seven straight home meetings with San Jose since the Barracuda’s last win on Jan. 13, 2016.

Alumni Watch
In Stanley Cup Playoff action yesterday, Erik Karlsson and Mark Stone each notched a goal and an assist as Ottawa advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals with a 4-2 win over the N.Y. Rangers… Five of the six goals in the game were scored by Binghamton Senators alumni (Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Mike Hoffman, Mika Zibanejad).

In the 2017 IIHF World Championships yesterday, Yohann Auvitu, who played 29 AHL games with Albany this season, tallied a goal and an assist in France’s 4-3 shootout win over Switzerland… Patrick Thoresen recorded a goal and two assists to help Norway to a 5-1 win over Slovenia… Martin Gernat and Mario Bliznak scored third-period goals for Slovakia in a 4-3 shootout loss to Denmark.


On This Date
May 10, 2007Loui Eriksson scores eight seconds into the game, Matt Niskanen records two assists and Dan Ellis makes 36 saves as Iowa staves off elimination with a 5-1 win over Chicago in Game 5 of their West Division final.

May 10, 1982 – The New Brunswick Hawks, led by rookies Steve Larmer and Steve Ludzik, win the Calder Cup with a 4-2 win over the Binghamton Whalers.
