The first round of the 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs ends tonight with Game 5 in both Pacific Division semifinals… Stockton was just over five minutes away from elimination on Sunday afternoon before roaring back for a 5-3 win over San Jose in Game 4, setting up tonight’s showdown at SAP Center… Heat rookie Andrew Mangiapane (1-2-3) tied Sunday’s game with 5:05 left in regulation, scoring his first goal of the series after a 20-goal showing during the regular season… Linden Vey (4-1-5) then put home the winner with 2:56 to play, and added an empty-netter for his second two-goal game of the series… Hunter Shinkaruk (2-1-3) and Garnet Hathaway (2-2-4) registered a goal and an assist each for the Heat, who have scored 14 goals in the last three games after being shut out in the series opener… David Rittich (2-1, 3.27, .901) made 34 saves for the win in Game 4… Daniel O’Regan (2-1-3), Buddy Robinson (3-2-5) and Tim Heed (2-1-3) scored for the Barracuda, while Nick DeSimone (0-4-4) and Rourke Chartier (0-5-5) each had two assists… Troy Grosenick (2-2, 3.03, .893) stopped 28 of 32 shots in the loss… Ryan Carpenter (3-3-6) was held off the scoresheet in Game 4, but he still leads the AHL in playoff scoring (tied) and plus/minus (+7)… San Jose, which ranked second in the AHL on the power play in the regular season, is 1-for-17 in the series; Stockton is 3-for-18… The Heat have lost 11 of 14 visits to SAP Center all-time, but have split their last four.

The other Pacific Division semifinal also plays a fifth and deciding game this evening after Ontario’s 4-1 win over San Diego last night… Justin Auger (2-1-3) recorded his first three points of the series, including a pair of goals, and Paul LaDue (1-0-1) broke a 1-1 tie with a goal early in the third period as the Reign staved off elimination… T.J. Hensick (2-3-5) added a goal and two assists in Game 4 and Michael Mersch (0-3-3) recorded two helpers… Keaton Thompson (1-0-1) had the only goal for the Gulls, a power-play marker late in the second period… Jack Campbell (2-2, 1.77, .934) made 21 saves to backstop Ontario to the win… Jhonas Enroth (2-2, 2.02, .937) stopped 31 of 34 shots in defeat… Enroth (second) and Campbell (fourth) both rank among the AHL’s playoff leaders in save percentage… The Reign’s power play, third-best in the AHL in the regular season (22.9 percent), is 1-for-12 in the series; the Gulls are 3-for-12 with the man advantage… Tonight will be the 17th and final meeting this season between these teams; each has won eight times, with Ontario outscoring San Diego 39-37 and outshooting the Gulls 467-461.

In Stanley Cup Playoff action yesterday, former Lake Erie Monsters defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored 3:13 into overtime to lift Washington past Pittsburgh, 3-2… Justin Schultz, the 2012-13 Eddie Shore Award winner as the AHL’s outstanding defenseman, had a goal and an assist for the Penguins.

Cam Talbot stops 31 shots as Connecticut opens its second-round series with a 3-2 overtime victory over Norfolk, which had won 31 of its previous 32 games.

May 2, 2008Bobby Ryan ties the game with 57 seconds left in regulation and Brendan Mikkelson scores 5:20 into overtime as Portland stuns Providence, 4-3, to cut its series deficit in the Atlantic Division Finals to 2-1.
